The Brief

The clients had owned the Ocean Grove site for some time and wanted a permanent family home — one that would work for extended family, easy entertaining and genuine coastal enjoyment, without the compromises of a volume build. The brief prioritised a strong connection to outdoor spaces, a kitchen and living arrangement suited to larger gatherings, and a material palette that would perform well in a coastal environment without demanding constant attention.

The Outcome

A single-storey 412 m² residence with a clear, generous plan. A central open living, kitchen and dining zone opens directly to the pool and garden on two sides, with the sleeping quarters positioned for privacy and morning light. Wednesday Projects managed design, planning, construction and interior specification as a single team — with materials specified in full before construction commenced, ensuring the coastal palette remained consistent across every surface.

Pool & Landscape

Outdoor space designed as a room in its own right

The lap pool and surrounding garden were designed as an extension of the interior living spaces rather than a separate outdoor addition. Locally sourced stone paving, a restrained planting palette of native coastal species, and a continuous sightline from the kitchen island to the pool edge create a sense of spatial continuity that makes the home feel significantly larger than its footprint.

The pool pavilion and surrounding plantings were specified for year-round use and low maintenance — practical considerations that matter in a coastal setting where salt air and wind place real demands on materials and finishes.

Living & Kitchen

A central zone built for how the family actually lives

The open-plan kitchen, dining and living zone is the organisational heart of the home. Warm oak cabinetry, a generous stone island and a built-in fireplace with flanking joinery give the space a settled, considered quality that works equally for everyday family life and larger gatherings.

Full-width glazing to the north and west captures the afternoon light and frames direct views to the pool and garden. The transition between inside and outside requires nothing more than sliding a door — a result that depends on careful planning of floor levels, ceiling heights and threshold details during design, not on site improvisation.

Ensuite

A retreat that earns its position in the home

The main ensuite was positioned to capture a private garden outlook through full-height glazing — a view that brings natural light and a sense of calm into a space used at the beginning and end of every day. The freestanding bath, wall-mounted matte black tapware and open shower are resolved without excess.

Stone-format floor and wall tiles, selected for their textural quality and coastal resonance, provide a surface that will hold its appearance over time without the visual fatigue of a more trend-driven specification.

Master Bedroom

Private, quiet and oriented to the garden

The master suite occupies the quieter end of the plan, separated from the living zones and oriented to its own private garden courtyard. Full-height glazing with sheer linen screening gives the room a sense of connection to the outside without compromising the privacy the clients wanted.

Integrated oak joinery across the full bedroom wall, warm plaster tones and a considered lighting scheme give the room a quality that is easy to live with and free of anything trend-dependent. The palette was selected to feel restful at any time of day.

Project Complexity

What made this project demanding to deliver well

Coastal Environment

Every external material — stone, timber, glazing, hardware, roofing — was selected for long-term performance in a salt air environment, not just initial appearance. This kind of specification requires genuine experience with how coastal materials behave over time.

Indoor-Outdoor Integration

The connection between the kitchen and living zone and the pool terrace required precise coordination of floor levels, threshold details, glazing systems and drainage across multiple trades. These details were resolved during design and documentation — not on site.

Planning & Overlay Coordination

The site sits within a Significant Landscape Overlay. Early engagement with the responsible authority, a clear planning strategy, and the ability to respond to feedback without compromising the design were all essential to achieving the outcome without delay.
